Card Description
The men who rode behind her whispered. But she heard them. Her ears were sharp.
"Why did you hire that wretched woman?"
"The innkeeper said she knew the forest better than anyone."
"We've been riding for hours... She's gotten us lost!"
"This is bandit country! How's a little thing like her going to protect us from bandits? We'll all die in these woods!"
"Maybe we should-"
She signaled with a sweep of her arm. The men tugged at their horses' reins until the mounts came to a halt. The woman's steed did the same, without being urged. His reins still hung slack in her hand.
"Why've we stopped?" one of the men asked.
"Stay with Richard," she said.
"Who's Richard?"
"My horse."
"What're you doing?"
"We need to get to town before nightfall!" another said.
The woman made no answer. She simply leapt down from the saddle, and sprang into a run the moment her boots touched the ground. Her slim form disappeared through the undergrowth.
"Crazy wench!"
"She expects us to wait around here while she finds some bushes to squat behind?"
"Women!"
"I knew we should have hired-"
There was a scream. A man's scream.
"Bandits! It must be bandits!"
"Let's get out of here!"
"What about the woman?"
"To hell with her! I-"
The undergrowth parted, as the same lithe form slipped from its depths. The men's eyes grew large. Their jaws hung slack, making them look like gawping fish. Three rough, swarthy heads dangled from her right hand, suspended from the long manes of hair in her grasp.
"Bandits," she said.
She held the trophies up, then tossed them into the bushes and leapt onto Richard's back. The horse began to trot as soon as she graced the saddle.
Behind her the men whispered. But she heard them. Her ears were sharp.
"Good woman, that one-"
"I knew she was the girl for the job, the moment I laid eyes on her..."
"Pretty too, in a dangerous sort of way..."
"We should pay her extra..."
