Card Description
Though the ambush began hours ago, the battalion still held firm, largely thanks to the efforts of the shield bearers. Each of the shields were peppered with so many arrows that they now looked like strange porcupines.
The initial barrage had been brutal, striking down several soldiers before they even knew their enemies were nearby. But once the shield bearers had been able to move into place, no arrows had been able to injure anyone else.
The shots were coming few and far between, now. This had clearly become a waiting game, where each group was trying to out-wait the other. Lieutenant Greaves felt another arrow smack against his shield. It wasn’t particularly loud, or powerful, either. It felt almost casual, like someone was tapping him on the shoulder just to remind him they were still there, waiting.
Greaves huffed in frustration as the soldier next to his shoulder threw him a questioning look.
"They’re still out there." The lieutenant’s tone brimmed with annoyance.
"Looks like we’re not going anywhere until the evening patrol swings through here to back us up," came the soldier’s reply, almost a whine.
Greaves rolled his eyes in irritation and then cocked his head at a sound. He could swear he heard… footsteps? And some kind of buzzing?
Cautiously, Greaves poked his head around the side of his shield and saw an aged elf, her white hair contrasted dramatically against her dark skin. She stood in the middle of the road, leaning on her staff.
Her eyes met Greaves' for a second before she raised her free hand and gestured. The buzzing increased in volume and a shadow began to spread out across the road.
The shield bearers all looked up as one. Near the canopy level, a seething darkness was streaming down towards the soldiers. As it grew closer, Greaves realized it wasn’t a single thing, but a mass of vicious insects including scorpion wasps, dragon spiders, ambush mantises.
He only had a second to draw in a breath and duck down with his hands over his head before the insects smashed into the ring of shields, clamboring across the soldiers, and crawling into the seams of their armor.
The men dropped their shields and started slapping at their limbs and torsos, seeking to crush the creatures as they began to sting and bite.
This time, the elves' arrows made short work of the soldiers.
