Card Description
Rayet ran through the forest as fast as he could. He could hear the thunder of hooves closing in from behind.
Things had been going too well. He'd let himself get lulled into a sense of false security since he hadn't spotted any soldiers for the past several days, so he decided to travel on the open road. And, of course, that was when he'd turned the corner and walked right into a damned cavalry patrol.
The patrol was gaining on him. Rayet didn't want to draw even more attention to himself, but he needed to create some distance if he wanted to get away without killing anyone and letting the army know he was involved in events.
Rayet slid to a stop and turned, arms outstretched. Blue flames plumed out from his palms; within a few seconds he had created a wall of fire stretching several hundred feet in each direction. That ought to force the cavalry to circle around, giving him the time he needed to find a hiding spot where he could hole up until the patrol moved on.
He started to run again, a fierce grin splitting his face. It was stupid, but he was enjoying himself, in spite of the danger. Things had been so blasted boring until now.
And then he heard the first scream.
He spared a glance over his shoulder and saw that the cavalry riders had tried to jump the flames he'd just laid down. Men and horses writhed on the ground, desperately rolling back and forth in an effort to put out the fire that was sticking to their bodies.
The gnome gritted his teeth and continued his flight.
"You damn fools," he muttered angrily.
