Introduction[]

"Roar, gold dragon!"

"The blue wyrm watches!"

"Crenus!"

"Kasan!"

"Blood and death!"

"Aarrrggghhh!"

These and perhaps half a dozen other shrieks ring out. Then the two reformed units, gathered bands of warriors, crash into one another -- crushing air from lungs and words from throats.

You drive forward, shoving your shield against one bearing the Selutha crest, grinding azure dragon against aureate. It's like throwing your weight at a mountain. Ranks of armored men and women push against you from in front and behind, the former trying to show you back even as the latter urge you forward, turning the clash into one great contest of pressure.

It's a grueling, arduous way of battle -- an ancient method of massed combat that your tutors schooled you in. With such engagements martial skill matters little. There's no room for fancy swordplay or breathtaking feats of agility. It's a battle of courage, will, and weight. One massed formation will remain strong. The other will give way and break, its determination unequal to the task. And when that happens...

Conclusion[]

Defeat appears on the soldier's face in front of you, as your body senses the impending victory. The soldier knows his line is about to falter even before it yields. In so tight a battle he's aware of every minute shift of pressure. And so are you. The enemy shield wall is buckling.

"Come on, you royal bastards!" Hugh bellows on your right, somehow finding his voice in the scrum.

Rakshara roars on your left.

The two of them feel it too. In this mode of warfare you're all connected, each friend and foe part of the same union of callous sympathy. They both push forward, at the epicenter of the surge, lending their powerful weight to the cause.

Gold dragons collapse. Their line breaks. Yours rushes over them like a crashing wave -- tearing their formation apart. And with that triumph comes the space to wield blades and inflict slaughter.
